Butz completes Civic Theatre renovations and restoration

Allentown, PA, October 23, 2018 . . . Alvin H. Butz, Inc., a member of The Butz Family of Companies, has recently completed phases one and two of the renovations and restoration of the Civic Theatre of Allentown.

Civic's Nineteenth Street Theatre in Allentown was originally built in 1928 and is a treasured architectural landmark in the city's West End. Civic operates a full-time cinema exclusively showing art, independent and foreign films, live theatre productions and a theatre school. The existing building was structurally sound but was in need of upgrades and restoration.

"We are proud to be a part of restoring this landmark facility," says Greg L. Butz, President & CEO of Alvin H. Butz, Inc. "Our company has always been a huge proponent and supporter of the arts and recognize the importance and impact the newly renovated theatre will have on the performing arts community."

Features of the project included:

  • Front of House / Auditorium restoration and decorative architectural work
  • Office renovations
  • Basement renovations
  • Electrical, HVAC, sprinkler, and general plumbing upgrades
  • Back of House and stage upgrades
  • Lobby & concession stand renovations
  • New patron lounge and box office
Designed in the "High Art Deco Style," special care was taken to preserve the integrity of the facility's architectural elements and ornamentation. Plaster ceiling and wall water damage was repaired and the Art Deco trim and murals in the lobby and auditorium were cleaned and restored. Plaster restoration included fabrication and replication of missing or damaged ornaments, patching and repairing of damaged areas.

Phase III of the project will include fa├žade restoration and renovations to the second floor exterior windows and rooms used for rehearsals and Civic Theatre School classes.

"Civic has completed important upgrades to our 19th Street home since acquiring the theatre in 1957 but the current three-phase project is by far the most ambitious and ensures that this beautiful landmark will be here for future generations to enjoy. Alvin H. Butz, Inc. has been instrumental in making Civic's dream a reality," says Maria DeFebo-Edwards, President of Civic Theatre of Allentown.

A ribbon cutting was held on October 11th.
