Butz Family of Companies receives CMAA awards for two projects

Allentown, PA, June 25, 2019 . . . The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alexander Building Construction Co., Alvin H. Butz, Inc. and Shoemaker Construction Co., received two 2019 Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Mid-Atlantic Chapter Project of the Year Awards.

The Pennsylvania State University - Schuylkill Campus - Student Community Center Addition and Renovation project received an award for LEED/Sustainable Projects. The Philadelphia Housing Authority Headquarters at Ridge Avenue project received an award for Public Building Projects over $20 million.

Alvin H. Butz, Inc. was the construction manager for The Penn State - Schuylkill Campus - Student Community Center Addition and Renovation project and the architect was Spillman Farmer Architects.

The 5,000 square foot expansion and 9,000 square foot renovation made the dining facility larger, more efficient and modern. Seating capacity was expanded from 100 to 175 people.

Some features of the facility included:

  • Modern exterior with glass facade
  • New indoor and outdoor seating options
  • Expanded kitchen and servery
  • More flexible seating and space allocation
  • Game room and permanent stage for performances
"Multiple challenges arose throughout the construction of this project, but with a dedicated project team working closely together, the project was successfully delivered within budget and schedule, while fully meeting the needs of the University, its staff and students," said Greg L. Butz, President and CEO of Alvin H. Butz, Inc.

Shoemaker/Synterra, A Joint Venture was the construction manager and BLTa was the architect for the Philadelphia Housing Authority Headquarters at Ridge Avenue project.

The five-story, plus basement facility consolidated PHA's offices into one main headquarters facility bringing all public and administrative functions together in a modern Class A office building. The building is clad in glass and stone with three exterior, open plaza areas. The project is seeking LEED Silver Certification.

A few features of the project included:
  • 500 seat Multipurpose Room
  • Executive suite with roof terrace
  • Fully functional police headquarters
  • Servery on ground floor
  • Data center and Fitness center
  • Retail space on ground floor
The CMAA annual awards program serves to recognize excellence in the construction management field. CMAA judges look for examples of the successful application of construction management principles and standards.

The addition of the 2019 awards mark seventeen regional CMAA Regional Project Achievement awards received by a Butz Family Company. Some recent projects that have won awards are:

  • Geisinger Health System - New Medical Laboratories
  • Allentown Neighborhood Improvement Zone Development Authority - PPL Center
  • WellSpan York Hospital - Emergency Power System Improvement
  • Mount Nittany Medical Center - Lance and Ellen Cancer Pavilion
  • Philadelphia Housing Authority - Norris Apartments Revitalization
  • Penn State University - Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building
An awards dinner was held on June 12, 2019 at The Union League of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in recognition of this year's CMAA award winners.
