Butz Celebrates 175 Years of Building in Eastern PA

Allentown, PA, June 25, 2018 . . . Alvin H. Butz, Inc., a member of The Butz Family of Companies, is pleased to announce that the company is celebrating 175 years of building in Eastern PA. Butz has been consistently ranked over the last 30 years among the nation's Top 400 Contractors by ENR, McGraw-Hill's construction industry magazine, and is one of the largest and most reputable construction management firms headquartered in Pennsylvania. It is the only firm headquartered in the Lehigh Valley to make the list.

The Butz family has a long, successful tradition of building in the Lehigh Valley that dates back to the mid-1800s when the family constructed covered bridges. In 1842, Bogert's Bridge was built by Solomon, the first generation Butz builder. In 1913, Solomon Butz, Jr., under the name Butz and Clader, was awarded the Lehigh County Courthouse for $200,000, its largest project at the time. Solomon, Jr.'s son, Alvin, joined Butz and Clader and quickly rose from laborer to carpenter. While in his mid-20s, he founded Alvin H. Butz, General Contractor and operated the company out of his home at 26th and Allen Streets, in Allentown. Other notable milestones include:

  • Alvin's son, Lee, joined the company in 1957 after graduating from Lehigh University and two-years of service in the Army.
  • In 1972, Lee changed the business model of the company from general contracting to construction management. Sacred Heart Hospital Tower was the first project completed under this approach in 1974. The firm remains committed to the CM approach and it is the primary delivery method for projects today.
  • Lee's son, Greg, joined the firm in 1980, and, in 1995, was named president.
  • Under Greg's leadership, Alvin H. Butz, Inc., Alexander Building Construction Co. and Shoemaker Construction Co. were united in 2003 as The Butz Family of Companies. The Butz Family of Companies provides construction management services in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware and Maryland.
  • Butz formed the company, Gates Butz Institutional Construction LLC, in Naples, FL in 2005.
  • In 2006, Greg relocated the corporate headquarters to 9th and Hamilton Streets. Designed by Greg's brother, Eric, and wife, Debora, of Roberson Butz Architects, the Butz Corporate Center was expanded in 2013 and again in 2016.
  • A partnership was formed with Procida Construction Co. in New York, NY in 2008.
  • In 2014, the company's commitment to downtown Allentown continued with the construction of PPL Center, a monumental project that began the revitalization of Pennsylvania's third largest city.
  • In 2016, Forge Development Group in Allentown was formed by Greg Butz and Andy Baldo.
  • Greg's sons, Mike and Steve, now work for the company, securing the firms future with the 6th generation of Butz builders.

"The Butz Family of Companies is dedicated to superior project delivery in an atmosphere of teamwork and open communication in all of our business relationships," says Greg L. Butz, President & CEO of Alvin H. Butz, Inc. and The Butz Family of Companies. "Our goal is not to grow our company's revenue year-to-year but to continuously improve our service and our relationships with our clients, to develop long-term partnerships, and contribute to our community and our people. Above all else, the biggest reason for our success is our people."

Butz constructs and renovates all types of buildings including healthcare, higher education, K-12, corporate headquarters, entertainment and sports facilities, manufacturing and office space and parking facilities.

"In addition to our people, one of the things that sets Butz apart and has brought us to compete not just with other local firms, but with larger international firms, is our ability to respond to market needs through increased use of technology and innovative approaches such as Lean Construction," says Greg Butz, President and CEO of Alvin H. Butz, Inc. and The Butz Family of Companies. "Incorporating technology and Lean methodologies into our projects allows us to provide Target Value Design and help get the clients building online faster and more economically."

Innovative techniques used on projects include:

  • 3D, 4D, 5D and 6D Building Information Modeling to create building mock-ups to improve efficiency
  • Virtual reality, in conjunction with BIM, helps owners visualize the smallest details on future buildings
  • Onsite technology like tablets, Submittal Exchange┬« and our mobile screen Field Collaboration Stations help reduce the use of paper in favor of improved communication and easier access to project documents
  • Lean Construction techniques like The Last Planner┬« System and Pull Planning allow for more accurate scheduling
  • The Just-in-Time concept ensures that project materials are delivered at the exact moment and place needed

Butz will be celebrating the 175th anniversary through June 2019 with a special client event, social media posts, e-newsletters featuring employee memories and the launch of a new website. Additionally, The Butz Family of Companies is celebrating the 90th anniversary for Alexander Building Construction Co. and the 75th anniversary of Shoemaker Construction Co.
